Interior architecture Barajas Airport
It was the vision of one of the world’s most celebrated architects that resulted in Barajas Airport, the new airport for Madrid. This prestigious project is not only impressive because of its sheer scale but also, in fact most of all, for the designer’s futuristic vision and his unique perception of beauty. The architect was no less than the famous British master-builder Richard Rodgers.
When its enormous T4 terminal goes into operation in 2006, Barajas will have become one of the three biggest airports in the world, with a capacity of 70 million passengers a year. For the interior of the T4 terminal, and to ensure optimum use of its 500,000 square metres, only first-class specialists were called in. These included the Madrid company Diseños Modulares, the proud representative of Maars in Spain.
There are two floors, subdivided into six sections: check-in, boarding and baggage handling on the upper floor and maintenance, baggage processing and internal transport on the lower floor. It’s a small city. A city that accommodates approximately 36,000 square metres of Maars partitioning systems. Systems that flow seamless into the provocative, elegant interplay of shapes that characterises the complex. Next to the terminal is an imposing annex with 26 boarding bridges for 15 million passengers a year, equipped with Maars partition systems by Diseños Modulares. Diseños Modulares and Maars once again prove themselves to be the compartmenting specialists. In Spain, Europe and in many countries throughout the world.
